Modern buildings are complex technical environments. HVAC, lighting, fire safety, access control, power monitoring and security systems each generate data. In most facilities today that data is trapped in separate, disconnected systems. Integration of building systems is the foundation of operational efficiency and real energy management.
The distinction between BAS and BMS matters: a Building Automation System controls individual subsystems; a Building Management System provides the overarching view and cross-system coordination. As buildings become smarter, the BMS increasingly needs to be IT-ready, meaning it must operate over standard IP networks and be able to exchange data with cloud platforms and enterprise systems.
The critical question for any facility is not which system is installed, but whether the data those systems generate is accessible, structured and usable. A facility with a sophisticated BMS that produces isolated data is less valuable than a simpler setup with open data flows.
The best BMS is the one whose data you can actually use.
