What is Automation?

Automation is the use of control systems to regulate technical processes in a facility without manual intervention, based on a closed-loop architecture where sensors feed a logic controller that drives actuators.

Technical Definition: The use of control systems to regulate technical processes in a facility without manual intervention. It rests on a closed-loop architecture where sensors provide input to a logic module (e.g. a PLC or DDC) which in turn drives actuators based on algorithms such as PID control.

Why it matters: Automation is the key to energy optimisation and a stable indoor climate. By automating operations, systems respond to changes in real time – presence, outdoor temperature – far faster than any human operator.

HubMind’s view: Automation without structure creates “black boxes”. We ensure that automation rests on an open architecture and a clear naming convention, so the system remains maintainable long after the original programmer has moved on.
