What is IEC 61131?

IEC 61131 is the international standard for programmable logic controllers, with IEC 61131-3 defining five programming languages (Ladder Diagram, FBD, Structured Text, Instruction List, SFC) that make PLC code transferable across hardware vendors.

Technical Definition: The international standard for programmable logic controllers (PLCs). IEC 61131-3 defines five programming languages for automation: Ladder Diagram (LD), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Structured Text (ST), Instruction List (IL) and Sequential Function Chart (SFC).

Why it matters: IEC 61131-3 compliant programming is transferable between different hardware platforms. A correctly written PLC program in Structured Text can be moved from one vendor’s hardware to another with minimal changes – dramatically reducing vendor lock-in.

HubMind’s view: We require IEC 61131-3 compliant programming for all new installations. We also review existing programs to ensure they are properly documented and maintainable by any competent engineer.
