What is DCS?

A DCS (Distributed Control System) is a control architecture where control is distributed across multiple controllers throughout the facility rather than centralised in a single CPU – providing redundancy and scalability for large industrial processes.

Technical Definition: A control system where control is not centralised in a single CPU but distributed across multiple controllers throughout the facility. In large industrial environments, a DCS is the heart of process control – each controller handles a specific area while sharing data on a central network.

Why it matters: DCS enables redundancy and reliability – if one controller fails, the others continue operating. It scales to large industrial facilities in ways that a centralised PLC cannot.
