ISA-88

What is ISA-88 (IEC 61512)?

ISA-88, formally IEC 61512, is the standard for batch control and process control, defining a hierarchical control structure for sequential processes common in food, pharmaceutical and chemical production.

Technical Definition: The standard for batch control and process control. It defines the control structure for processes that occur in sequential, discrete steps – common in food, pharmaceutical and chemical production. The ISA-88 hierarchy: Procedure → Unit Procedure → Operation → Phase, mapped to Equipment: Process Cell → Unit → Equipment Module → Control Module.

Why it matters: ISA-88 provides a universal language between process engineers and automation engineers. It enables modular, reusable batch recipes that are independent of specific equipment hardware.

HubMind’s view: We apply ISA-88 principles in process industries to create batch control architectures that are modular, maintainable and scalable, regardless of which PLC vendor is used.
