What is Gateway?
A Gateway is a network node serving as a protocol converter between incompatible systems, translating data between protocols (e.g. Modbus to MQTT, or BACnet to OPC UA) to enable legacy systems to participate in modern data architectures.
Technical Definition: A network node serving as a protocol converter between incompatible networks or systems. A gateway “translates” data between protocols (e.g. from Modbus to MQTT or from BACnet to OPC UA), enabling older systems to participate in a modern data architecture.
Why it matters: A typical building contains 10-20 different protocols. Without gateways, each system becomes a silo. A well-designed gateway layer is the practical foundation for IT/OT convergence without replacing existing equipment.
HubMind’s view: A gateway is only as good as the data model behind it. We ensure gateways map data to a standardised structure and correct naming convention – not just a raw protocol translation.
