What is Modbus?

Modbus is an open serial communication protocol (de facto standard since 1979) widely used in industrial and building automation, available as Modbus RTU/ASCII on RS-485 and Modbus TCP over Ethernet.

Technical Definition: An open serial communication protocol (de facto standard from 1979) widely used in industrial and building automation. Modbus RTU/ASCII works on serial connections (RS-485), while Modbus TCP runs over Ethernet. It is simple, robust and supported by virtually all industrial hardware vendors.

Why it matters: Modbus is the lingua franca of the industrial world. Even though it is technologically dated and limited in functionality, it remains omnipresent in existing installations and must be handled in any integration project.

HubMind’s view: Modbus persists due to hardware simplicity but creates challenges in modern digital environments – lacking security, data context and scalability. We design migration paths from Modbus to modern protocols without disrupting existing operations.
