What is IFC / BIM?
IFC (Industry Foundation Classes, ISO 16739) is an open file format for exchanging 3D building models between different BIM software, forming the interoperability backbone of BIM (Building Information Modelling) methodology.
Technical Definition: IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is an open, standardised file format (ISO 16739) for exchanging 3D building models between different BIM software. BIM (Building Information Modelling) is the broader methodology for creating and managing digital representations of facilities throughout their lifecycle.
Why it matters: IFC/BIM breaks vendor lock-in to a specific CAD or BIM tool. It enables architects, engineers, contractors and facility managers to share a common digital model regardless of which software each party uses.
HubMind’s view: BIM is only valuable if the data inside the model follows correct naming conventions and reference designations. A beautifully modelled building with incorrectly named components provides limited operational value.
