What is MOM?
Technical definition
Manufacturing Operations Management – the umbrella concept (defined in ISA-95 part 3) for managing production-related operations: production, quality, maintenance and inventory/logistics. MOM describes capabilities and activities – not a single system.
In brief
MOM is the operations domain. MES is one of the systems supporting it. Confusing the two usually means buying the wrong solution.
The Challenge
MOM is often reduced to the question “which MES should we buy?”. But production, quality, maintenance and logistics are connected in reality – and when each area buys its own system without a shared information model, you recreate the very silos digitalisation was supposed to remove. The quality deviation cannot be linked to the batch, the maintenance stop is invisible in production planning and the inventory balance lives a life of its own.

Warnings & Pitfalls
“MOM = MES”: Buying an MES does not solve maintenance, quality and logistics. Define the capabilities first, choose systems second.
The suite that solves everything: A vendor package covering all four areas rarely does all of them well. Evaluate per capability – and require open interfaces between the parts.
Four islands instead of one: Without a shared information model, each MOM area becomes its own project with its own identities – and integration becomes a permanent cost.
