What is MIS?
Technical definition
Management Information System – systems that collect and refine operational data into decision support for management: reports, key performance indicators and trends. In the facility world, typically energy reporting, production reporting and OEE dashboards.
In brief
MIS is the window management sees the operation through. If the underlying data is unstructured, the window shows the wrong picture – beautifully formatted.
The Challenge
Most facilities have plenty of reports – but the numbers do not agree. The energy report says one thing, the production report another and the finance system a third. The cause is rarely the reporting tool but the underlying data: different systems count on different identities, time periods and definitions. An MIS built on ungoverned data becomes dashboard theatre – decisions made on numbers nobody can trace.
HubMind’s Methodology
We never start in the reporting tool. The quality of an MIS is determined by the Map: shared identities, defined KPIs and clear master data ownership. Every KPI needs a definition, a data source and an owner – otherwise it is an opinion with a chart.
With a single source of truth and documented data mapping from source systems such as MES, SCADA and maintenance systems, reporting becomes traceable – and therefore trustworthy.
Warnings & Pitfalls
Dashboard theatre: More charts is not more insight. Three traceable KPIs beat thirty untraceable ones.
BI on top of a broken structure: A modern BI tool on unstructured data only automates the distortion.
KPIs without owners: When nobody owns the definition of OEE or energy performance, every department gets its own truth.
💡Our Recommendation
Define the KPIs first: Formula, data source, time resolution and owner – for every KPI.
Build on a structured foundation: The MIS should consume from your single source of truth – not from export files.
Make the numbers traceable: Every value in a management report must be traceable back to its source.
Fewer, better reports: Remove reports nobody acts on.
FAQ
Is MIS the same as BI? BI (Business Intelligence) is the modern tool category; MIS is the broader concept for management’s information supply. In practice they overlap – the underlying data quality problem is the same.
What is the difference between MIS and MES? MES manages production operationally in real time. MIS aggregates and reports – for decisions at management and tactical level.
Where should we start? With the three KPIs management actually steers by. Define them, secure the data chain and expand from there.
