Naming Convention

What is Naming Convention?

A Naming Convention is an established ruleset defining how objects, signals and components in a facility are named – following international standards such as IEC 81346 and Haystack to give every component a unique, meaningful identifier.

Technical Definition: An established ruleset defining how objects, signals and components in a facility are named. A good naming convention follows international standards such as IEC 81346 (reference designation) and Haystack (semantic tagging), ensuring every component has a unique, unambiguous identifier.

Why it matters: Without a naming convention, maintenance teams must know the system from memory. “Pump_1” tells you nothing about location, function or system. A designation like “21-PMP-001” based on IEC 81346 tells you everything immediately.

HubMind’s view: We base naming conventions on international standards and adapt them to each facility’s specific needs. A consistent naming convention is the single greatest enabler of future integrations and analytics.
