Proprietary Systems

What is Proprietary Systems?

Proprietary systems are wholly owned and controlled by a single manufacturer, using proprietary protocols and formats that lock the customer into a single vendor for all upgrades, maintenance and future integrations.

Systems wholly owned and controlled by a single manufacturer, often using proprietary communication protocols and data formats.

Why it matters: Proprietary systems create vendor lock-in by design. When the manufacturer controls both protocol and data format, you cannot switch vendors, add third-party analytics or integrate with other systems without their approval and fees.

HubMind’s view: We always assess the openness of any system before recommending it. In some cases, a proprietary system is acceptable if it provides open APIs and data export. Systems with no openness whatsoever are a long-term liability that grows more expensive every year.
