OPEX

What is OPEX?

OPEX (Operating Expenditure) covers ongoing costs for running a system – licences, cloud services, maintenance and personnel – and understanding it is critical for accurate total cost of ownership analysis.

Technical Definition: OPEX (Operating Expenditure) covers ongoing costs for running a system: licences, cloud services, maintenance and continuous personnel costs. In digital services, cloud subscriptions shift costs from CAPEX (one-time purchase) to OPEX (recurring fees).

Why it matters: Understanding OPEX is critical for long-term budgeting. A cloud-based BMS may have lower initial CAPEX but higher OPEX over time. The LCC analysis determines which model delivers better value over the full asset lifetime.

HubMind’s view: We help clients model both CAPEX and OPEX scenarios to make informed investment decisions. Total cost of ownership always beats lowest initial price as the primary decision criterion.
