What is OPC UA?

OPC UA (IEC 62541) is a platform-independent, service-oriented architecture protocol for industrial data exchange, providing both a secure communication mechanism and a standardised data model for machine-to-machine communication.

OPC Unified Architecture

Technical Definition: A platform-independent, service-oriented architecture protocol (IEC 62541) designed for industrial data exchange. OPC UA provides both a communication mechanism and a standardised data model – enabling machines from different manufacturers to communicate without translation layers.

Why it matters: OPC UA has become the standard for machine-to-machine communication in Industry 4.0. Its built-in security (authentication, authorisation, encryption), platform independence and rich information modelling make it the backbone of modern industrial integration.

HubMind’s view: We see OPC UA and MQTT as complementary: OPC UA for structured, rich data models between industrial systems; MQTT for lightweight, high-frequency sensor data to cloud. Together they cover the full integration stack.
