What is BACnet?

BACnet (ISO 16484-5) is the international standard communication protocol designed specifically for building automation, enabling systems from different manufacturers to interoperate via standardised objects and services.

Technical Definition: An ISO-standardised (16484-5) communication protocol designed specifically for building automation. BACnet allows systems from different manufacturers to interoperate by defining standardised objects (e.g. “Analog Input”) and services. The modern security variant BACnet/SC (Secure Connect) implements TLS 1.3 encryption to protect all traffic.

Why it matters: BACnet is the most common language for interconnecting HVAC, lighting and other building systems from different vendors. Without it, every integration is a custom, costly point-to-point project.

HubMind’s view: We verify BACnet implementation quality during commissioning. A poorly configured BACnet network is often the root cause of why systems appear integrated on paper but fail to share useful data in practice.
