REST API

What is REST API?

A REST API (Representational State Transfer) is an architectural style for web services using standard HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE) that exposes resources at specific URLs and returns data in JSON or XML format.

Technical Definition: REST (Representational State Transfer) is an architectural style for distributed systems using standard HTTP methods (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE). A REST API exposes resources at specific URLs (endpoints) and returns data in formats such as JSON or XML. REST APIs are stateless – each request contains all information needed to process it.

Why it matters: REST APIs are the connective tissue of modern digital systems. A system with a well-documented REST API can be integrated with virtually any other modern platform without custom development.

HubMind’s view: We evaluate the quality of a vendor’s REST API as part of every procurement process. A poorly designed or undocumented API is a hidden integration cost that materialises years after the purchase decision.
