What is RDS?
RDS (Reference Designation System) is a systematic method for creating unique reference identifiers for all components in a facility, based on IEC 81346, that immediately communicates a component’s location, function and system membership.
A system for creating unique reference designations for all components in a facility, based on IEC 81346. Instead of naming a fan “Fan_1” (which says nothing about where it is or what it does), RDS gives it a designation like “21-FAN-001” that immediately communicates its location and function.
Why it matters: RDS makes it possible to consistently link digital data to physical components. Without it, sensor data from “Fan_1” cannot be reliably connected to the maintenance record for that specific fan in the CMMS.
HubMind’s view: RDS is the foundation of our naming convention work. We implement IEC 81346-based reference designations in every new installation and support facilities migrating from legacy naming schemes.
