What is Metadata?

Metadata is “data about data” – the information that gives a data point its meaning, including who collected it, when, from which device, at which location and in which unit, transforming raw sensor values into structured, usable information.

Technical Definition: Metadata is “data about data”. It is the information that gives a data point its meaning – not just the value, but who collected it, when, from which device, at which physical location and in which unit it is measured. Metadata is what transforms raw sensor values into structured, usable information.

Why it matters: Without metadata, a sensor value of “23.4” is meaningless. With correct metadata, it becomes “Indoor air temperature, Zone A, Floor 3, measured 2026-07-09 14:23, unit °C”. Good metadata is the difference between raw data and actionable knowledge.

HubMind’s view: Good metadata does not just transport numbers – it transports insights that enable proactive facility management. We implement metadata standards based on international frameworks such as Project Haystack and DTDL.
