What is Broker?

A Broker is a software component serving as a central communication hub in a publish/subscribe system, receiving data from publishers and distributing it instantly to all subscribers who need it.

Technical Definition: A software component that serves as a central communication hub in a publish/subscribe system. When a device publishes a data point, the broker ensures all subscribers (systems that need that data) receive it instantly. MQTT is the dominant protocol for broker-based communication in modern building automation.

Why it matters: The broker eliminates direct point-to-point connections between systems. Instead of N×M integrations, you get N+M connections – each device connects only to the broker, not to every other device.

HubMind’s view: We advocate a broker-based architecture where the broker enables a Unified Namespace: a single place where all facility data is available in real time, accessible to any system.
